Welcome Back Kelsie: A Fresh Perspective!

Kelsie Mazur, DPT

Hi Wattage family,

I’m back and with a new baby!

After three months on maternity leave, I’m stepping back into the gym and back into writing with full gratitude, a slightly different perspective, and a much deeper appreciation for the work we do here at Wattage. As many of you know, my baby boy, precious gem, Leo Charles Ortiz decided to make his debut three weeks early. What a stinker! What I did not anticipate was that his arrival would include a C section. That was not the birth experience I had envisioned or prepared for.

Like many women, I had a plan. And like many women, birth had its own plan. Yippie!! As both an orthopedic physical therapist, and a physical therapist specializing in pelvic floor rehab, I intellectually understood the realities of labor and delivery. I educate women on it. I prepare them for it. I help them recover from it. But living it is different.

A C section brings its own physical and emotional challenges. These can include abdominal incision healing, core weakness, altered muscle activation, scar mobility restrictions, pelvic floor coordination changes, hormonal shifts, and sleep deprivation layered on top of recovery. Even with all my knowledge, I still had to slow down. I still had to respect healing timelines. I still had moments of frustration. I also had to practice what I preach.

Postpartum Recovery Is Not Just “Bouncing Back”

There is so much cultural pressure around bouncing back. But true recovery, whether after a vaginal birth or a C section, is a process. Postpartum rehabilitation should include restoring core strength safely, reconnecting to the pelvic floor, addressing scar mobility (since C section scars absolutely matter), managing urinary leakage, reducing pelvic pain, and supporting a safe return to exercise. After enduring all of these, I sought out professional help from a Doctor of Physical therapy. Labor and delivery are traumatic to the body. Even as a physical therapist, I am not exempt from the physical demands of pregnancy, labor, delivery, or abdominal surgery. I am no different than any other woman navigating postpartum recovery. My body went through the same changes, the same healing process, and the same need for guided rehabilitation.

Why This Matters to Me Even More Now- Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is Offered at Wattage

Going through my own postpartum journey deepened my empathy and strengthened my conviction in this specialty of pelvic floor rehab. I am a trained pelvic floor physical therapist, and I am here to help women preparing for birth, women recovering postpartum after vaginal delivery or C section, women years past delivery who are still experiencing symptoms, non pregnant women dealing with pelvic pain or leakage, athletes wanting to return to training confidently, and anyone struggling with pelvic floor dysfunction. Pelvic floor therapy is not just for those that are six weeks postpartum. It is not just for pregnancy. And it is definitely not only for women who have had children. Pelvic floor physical therapy is for women at every stage of life, including those who are pregnant, postpartum, athletic, perimenopausal, or simply wanting to move and live without discomfort. It benefits anyone experiencing pelvic pain, urinary or bowel leakage, pressure or heaviness, pain with intimacy, or core weakness. You do not have to have a baby to benefit from pelvic floor therapy; if you have symptoms, goals, or concerns, it is for you.
